Temporal Analysis of Park Cool Island effect created by Urban parks within Bengaluru
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study, Temporal Analysis of Park Cool Island effect created by urban parks within Bengaluru,
has been carried out using GIS, Remote sensing, and Field-based observations. The urban areas
have witnessed the unsustainable development of urban greens and parks due to unplanned and
haphazard development. Cities are constantly turned into concrete jungles. As city puffs for
breath, urban greens like park areas provide vast ecological, recreational, economic, and social
advantages. There is a need to plan for urban parks as critical units serving these needs. This
study will provide inputs to urban planners to plan for sustainable urban green reconstruction. To
understand the ecological services of the urban parks, the park cool islands created by Cubbon
Park, Lalbagh, and JP Park have been evaluated for a time-series data from 2001 to 2019 using
Landsat – 8 and Cartosat 2.5m data. The parks have shown the formation of PCIs throughout
the study years with significant variation in extents of cooling. The cooling effect is observed to
be decreasing with increasing distance from the park boundaries. On average, the parks are 1̊C
to 3̊C cooler than its surroundings.
